HVAC Local Services Ads: How Billing Works and Whether They Pay Off

HVAC local services ads can put your company near the top of Google. The ad can show a badge, your star rating and a call button. You pay when a customer contacts you, not when someone clicks. That makes them easy to start and easy to overspend on.

So are they worth it? They can be, if your phones get answered and you track which leads turn into booked jobs. The number that settles it is your cost per booked job, not your cost per lead.

This guide covers how Google bills these ads and what drives the cost. It also shows where they fit next to your Google Business Profile and regular Google Ads. We link Google’s own help pages so you can check each point. Google changes these tools often, so trust the help pages if your screen looks different.

What Google Local Services Ads are

Google describes Local Services Ads (LSA) as pay-per-lead listings for verified local service providers. A customer can call, message or book right from the ad. You pick the areas you serve and the jobs you want.

Per Google’s Local Services Ads overview, an ad can show your business name, phone number and hours. It can also show your star rating, review count, photos and a short bio. Calls go through a tracking number that forwards to your business phone.

Google lists four steps to get started. You tell Google about your business, choose a budget, pass screening, and then go live.

How HVAC local services ads are billed

Regular Google search ads charge per click. Google’s cost-per-click page says you pay for each click on your ads. Local Services Ads work another way. Per Google’s page on how leads work, you pay for valid leads.

Google counts these as valid leads:

  • You answer a call, or call the customer back and talk.
  • You miss a call during business hours and the caller stays on the line for more than 20 seconds.
  • A customer sends you a text or an email.
  • A customer leaves you a voicemail.
  • A customer sends a booking request (US and Canada only).

Look at the second item again. A missed call during business hours can still be charged. That is why phone coverage matters as much as the ad itself.

Google also says what it does not charge for. A call that rings for less than 20 seconds with no answer generally does not count. A caller who hangs up at your phone menu without pressing a key does not count either.

Your budget works by the week. You set an average weekly budget, and Google sets a monthly maximum. That maximum equals your weekly budget times the average number of weeks in a month.

A busy week can go over your weekly average, but the month cannot go over the maximum. Once you hit it, your ad stops showing for the rest of the month unless you raise the budget.

Google Guaranteed for HVAC is now Google Verified

You may still hear people talk about Google Guaranteed for HVAC companies. That badge is gone. Google announced on its blog that one Google Verified badge would replace it. The switch took effect October 20, 2025, as Search Engine Roundtable reported.

Google Guaranteed, Google Screened and License Verified by Google were all retired. Per Google’s Google Verified help page, the money-back program tied to the old badge was discontinued too. It covered services booked before December 7, 2025. If a sales rep still pitches that promise, ask to see the current Google page.

To earn the badge, you pass Google’s screening and verification process. It varies by business category and location. For a US business, it can include:

  • Background checks on owners and service workers in select categories. Google says these do not involve a credit check.
  • Proof that you own or manage your Google Business Profile.
  • Business registration, such as a D-U-N-S number, a state registration or an IRS EIN.
  • Insurance documents that stay valid for at least 14 days after you submit them.
  • Business and owner licenses, checked against state databases where possible.

Google says a D-U-N-S application can take up to 30 days. Start early if you do not have one. Google may also ask you to repeat checks from time to time. Skipping a requested review can lead to a lost badge, paused ads or a suspended account.

What drives the cost of local services ads

Google does not publish a price list for HVAC leads. Its page on how leads work says lead prices may vary by location, job type, lead type and bidding mode. Your own dashboard is the only reliable place to see what you pay.

Lead type

Google says message leads are typically priced lower than phone leads, though not always. A message lead price reflects how likely the customer is to book. Google also looks at the service requested and whether the customer contacted other advertisers.

Bidding mode

Google’s page on how bidding works lists three modes:

  • Maximize leads: Google sets your bid to get the most leads for your budget. Google recommends this mode.
  • Target cost per lead: Google adjusts bids toward a target. You can use its suggested target or enter your own.
  • Max per lead: You set the most you will pay for a single lead.

Google recommends a budget that supports at least 10 leads per week. It also says results take about two weeks to settle while the model learns your business. So judge a new setup over weeks, not days.

Budget and season

Per the same page, a higher weekly budget means more leads are possible. Your own demand also moves with the weather. A cold snap can bring a rush of no-heat calls and reach your monthly maximum early. Check your budget before the first cold front, not after.

Bad leads and credits

Some leads will not fit. Think wrong numbers, spam calls or requests for work you do not do. Per Google’s lead credits page, leads judged invalid or low quality when the customer first makes contact are not charged.

Charged leads are also reviewed again over time and may get credits automatically. In most cases, credits reach your account balance within 30 days. The original charge stays on your invoice, so read the credits line on your report too.

There are limits. Google no longer gives credits for leads marked job type not serviced or area not serviced. Keep your service list and service area accurate in your settings, since those calls are now on you.

You can still give feedback. In the Leads section, use Rate this lead to tell Google what went wrong with a lead.

How LSA fits with your Business Profile, the map pack and Google Ads

Think of the search page in layers. Local Services Ads are one paid layer, billed per lead. Regular Google search ads are another paid layer, billed per click. Your Google Business Profile and the map pack results it can show up in cost nothing per call.

These layers are linked. Per Google’s overview, the reviews on your ad include reviews from your Google Business Profile. The ad also previews that profile. A thin profile with few reviews follows you into the ad. That is why our Google Business Profile management work often comes before any ad spend.

Paid leads stop when the budget stops. Map pack visibility and local SEO take time to build, and they do not stop when you pause ads. One sensible plan: let ads fill the gaps while your free visibility grows. Our guide on how to rank in the Google map pack covers that side.

Regular Google Ads give you more control over keywords, ad text and landing pages. Local Services Ads give you less control but a simpler setup. Neither replaces the other. Facebook and Instagram ads reach people before they search, and our HVAC Facebook ads guide explains that channel.

Judge HVAC LSA by cost per booked job

Cost per lead is easy to see. On its own, it can fool you. A cheap lead that never books costs more than a pricier lead that turns into a furnace install.

Use this simple math each month:

  1. Add up your Local Services Ads spend for the month, minus any credits.
  2. Count the jobs you booked from those leads.
  3. Divide the spend by the booked jobs. That is your cost per booked job.
  4. Compare it with your average gross profit on those jobs.

Google gives you tools for this. Per its reports help page, you can mark a lead as booked and add the job type and customer name. Reports then show charged leads by call, message and booking, plus total spend and credits received.

The reports are only as good as your marking. Have your office mark booked leads every day. Then run the same math for regular Google Ads and Facebook ads. Give more of next month’s budget to the channel that books jobs for less.

Are local services ads worth it for your HVAC company?

Local Services Ads are more likely to make sense when these things are true:

  • Someone answers the phone during business hours, every time.
  • Your license, insurance and business records are current and easy to send.
  • Your Google Business Profile has recent reviews and an accurate list of services.
  • You can track booked jobs by source every week.
  • Your schedule has room for more service calls.

They are harder to justify when calls go to voicemail or the crew is booked out for weeks. The same goes when nobody tracks which calls became jobs. In those cases, fix the phones and the tracking first. Then test the ads for at least a full month.

Is Google Guaranteed still available for HVAC companies?

No. Google replaced it with the Google Verified badge starting October 20, 2025. Google also ended the money-back program tied to the old badge. It covered services booked before December 7, 2025.
